The reality that can't be faked

A factory grading its own output is a conflict of interest. Photos and videos for remote approval are easy to fake — shoot a few good units, ship the rest as-is. This is the most common failure once a buyer sources direct: nobody independent is left on the floor.

  • IQC Incoming Material Inspection — components verified against spec before they enter production, not after.
  • PPS Pre-Production Sample approval — a signed-off golden sample the entire run gets measured against.
  • DPI During Production Inspection — checks while the line is running, when fixing a problem still costs little.
  • FRI Final Random Inspection — AQL-based sampling (ANSI/ASQ Z1.4) before goods leave the factory, defects classified as critical, major, or minor.

A factory can't credibly self-certify this, and you can't replicate it from overseas without an independent inspector on the floor. Trust isn't a promise — it's a dated, photographed AQL report with a defect count and the authority to hold a batch that fails.

The one thing a factory has no reason to know

Factories build to the spec they're given. They have no incentive to flag that a spec won't clear certification in your target market — that responsibility sits with the buyer, not the manufacturer. Most buyers underestimate this until the product is already on the market.

  • MAP CERTS Applicable certifications identified before production starts — in the US: CPSIA, ASTM F963, FCC, COPPA; in the EU: Toy Safety Directive / EN 71, CE marking, RED, GDPR, and increasingly the AI Act for connected products.
  • COORDINATE TESTING Testing coordinated — not self-certified — with accredited third-party labs, keeping the recommendation independent and the liability where it belongs.
  • KEEP RECORDS Dated records kept of every marking and when it was applied, which matters if the product is ever questioned or recalled.

Going direct to a factory doesn't get you this information — it takes knowing the target market, not the factory. This is also the link that's hardest to shortcut.
